Windows XP-How to Make Partitions During Installation


During Installation of Windows XP, You have to select a Partition where you want to install windows setup.Either you can choose whole disk space to install windows or make partitions with desired sizes.

To Install windows on different partition, You may have two situations : No existing partitions ( new harddisk )  and already Existing partitions.

Now, You need to create new partitons or want to change existing partitions size or number of partitions.That is what this article all about.



If you don`t know how to get upto making partitions during installation, Check Installing Windows XP  and Follow all steps up to "Step 5-Select a Hard-disk partition where you want to install Windows XP"



For No Existing Partitions ( In New Harddisk ) :


Make sure that you have only one item on this page : Un-partitioned disk or Un-allocated disk.
  • Select Un-partitioned disk and read instructions just above it.
  • Look for create new partition, press C , if you see the similar, Proceed and press C.
  • Now Specify the Size for the new partition ( In MB ) and Press Enter.
  • A partition is created , Now Again select Un-partitioned Space and follow the above steps to create new partitions till the whole size is used or your desired size


In similar way, You can create many partitons as per your need from unpartitioned space.

After creating partitions, select a partition where you want to install windows xp and Proceed to setup Windows XP.




For Existing Partitions :



If you already have partitions created in your harddisk drive and want to create new partitions with different sizes or want to change the number of partitons i.e. increase or decrease the no. of partitions , First you have to delete existing partitions and then have to create new partitions.
Follow these steps :


  • Select the partition, Press D ( You can see instructions above the list of partitions in the same window to delete partition )
  • See the instructions in the next window and look for To delete the partition Press L ( or Enter ,then Press L for the system partition ) to confirm that you want to delete the partition.
  • Repeat same for each existing partition.
  • Now you have whole Space as Un-partitioned or Un-allocated Space. 
  • Follow all steps as in No Existing Partitions Heading to create new Partitions.
