How to Set up new Broadband Connection in Windows


The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers where people from across the world can share or get useful information. To connect to Internet, one needs an internet connection that can either be a broadband connection or
wi-fi connection or can use mobile data to connect to Internet in PC or laptop or using tethering and portable hotspot in android phone. Here, We will discuss How can anyone use a broadband connection to connect to the Internet.

To use this service, You first need to subscribe to a broadband internet service provider. Your ISP will also provide you a modem which enables to use your phone line to connect to your computer to access Internet. But, that`s is not enough. You also need to set up your computer with the broadband internet connection. For this, Your ISP will also provide you an Username and Password to use their service. 

Now, Follow the steps to Create a new broadband connection using the DSL or Cable in Windows :


Setting up a New Broadband (DSL or cable) Connection in Windows XP :



  • Click on Start >> Control Panel 
  • Now, Double Click on Network and Internet Connections.
  • Now, Choose Network Connections >> Create a new connection from the Network Tasks pane.
  • In New Connection Wizard window, Click on Next
  • Click Connect to the Internet >> Next
  • Click Set up my connection manually >> Next
  • Now, Choose Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and Password for DSL connection.
  • On the ISP Name field, Enter any name or your ISP name i.e. Broadband Connection >> Next
  • Under Connection Availability, Choose Anyone`s use or My use only as you wish and Click on Next
  • Then, Enter the Username and Password that your ISP provided to you.
  • Select Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.
  • Click on Finish. 


Note : If you are using Cable modem connection, choose the Connect using a 
          broadband connection that is always on and Click Next then Finish from the 
          two options for broadband Under Internet Connection instead of a DSL 
          Connection.




Set up Broadband Connection in Windows 7 :


  • Click on Start >> Control Panel 
  • Now, Double Click on Network and Internet
  • Click On Network and Sharing Center
  • Now, Select Set up a new connection or network.
  • Select Connect to the Internet >> Next.
  • Then Select Broadband (PPPoE)
  • Enter the Username and Password that your ISP provided to you.
  • Enter Connection name i.e. Broadband Connection >> Connect
  • You can Select (Tick)  Allow other People to Connect to use this connection.


That`s it.

Now, You are ready to use the Internet. To use this, You now only need to Click on your Broadband Connection Icon from the desktop or Start >> Connect To which, as a result, opens a window asking for your confirmation to Connect to the Internet.

You can also Configure your IP  Address Settings for your connection, if you provided by your ISP. To do this, Follow the Instructions :




Configure IP Setting for Internet Connection :


  • Click on Start >> Control Panel 
  • Now, Double Click on Network and Internet
  • Click On Network and Sharing Center
  • Now, Click on Change Adapter Settings in left window pane.
  • Look for your newly created connection name and Right Click.
  • Choose Properties >> Networking Tab
  • Double Click on Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4)
  • Now, Enter IP Address and DNS Address as provided by your ISP.
  • Click on OK >> Ok to close the window.


Note : You can also left them blank to obtain an IP address Automatically. In 
          Windows XP, Do the same from list of Network Connections.

Using these ways, you can set up a new broadband (DSL) connection to access the Internet at fast speed.

If you wish to set-up any other new connection and want to delete your existing connection or have various connections in your network notification list, you can do it easily. To Delete your existing dial-up or wireless connection, follow the steps.



How to Delete Existing Dial-up or Wireless Connection :


  • Click on Start >> Control Panel 
  • Double Click on Network and Internet >> Network and Sharing Center
  • Now, Click on Change Adapter Settings in left window pane.
  • Select any connection, you wish to remove and Right clicking on it and Choose Delete.

That`s it.

This was a step by step guide to create a new broadband connection using DSL or Cable in windows along with the configuration settings of IP Address. Using the similar way, you can make a new broadband connection in windows Vista or 8 also. Users can also Remove existing connections which are not in use as guided.
